New Patients

Welcome. You’re in the Right Place.

If You've Been Putting This Off, We Understand

Maybe it’s been a few years since your last dental visit. Maybe it’s been longer than that. Maybe you’ve been dealing with pain you’ve learned to ignore, or carrying around self-consciousness about your teeth that has quietly shaped the way you move through the world.

Whatever brought you here, and however long it’s been, we’re glad you made it.
At Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center, we see patients every single day who arrive nervous, embarrassed, or unsure what to expect. That is completely normal here. We do not judge the state of your teeth, how long it’s been, or what your circumstances look like. Our only job is to help you get healthier — and we’re good at it.

Who We See

We are a non-profit community dental clinic serving underserved individuals and families across Southwest Virginia. We specifically welcome:

If you’re unsure whether we’re the right fit for your situation, call us and ask. We would rather have that conversation with you than have you go without care.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

A Welcoming Environment

From the moment you walk in, you will be treated with respect and without judgment. Our front desk team and clinical staff understand the populations we serve and are here to support you — not to make you feel uncomfortable about needing help.

A Comprehensive Examination

Your first appointment begins with a thorough examination by one of our AEGD dental residents — a fully licensed dentist completing advanced clinical training under the supervision of experienced faculty. We will take any necessary X-rays, evaluate the health of your teeth and gums, screen for oral cancer, and check your blood pressure as part of our whole-patient approach to care.

An Honest Conversation About Your Treatment

After your exam, we will walk you through exactly what we found and what we recommend. We explain things in plain language, not dental jargon. You will know what needs to be addressed urgently, what can be monitored, and what your options are — before any treatment begins.
There is no pressure. There are no surprises. You are in control of your care.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

To help us serve you as efficiently as possible, please bring the following:
If you do not have some of these items, please come anyway and let us know. We will work with what you have.

Understanding the Sliding Fee Scale

All of our services are offered on a sliding fee scale, meaning what you pay is based on your household income and family size — not a fixed price. Patients with greater financial need pay lower fees. The scale is applied consistently and without judgment.
At your first visit, a member of our team will walk you through the sliding fee scale and help you understand what your costs will look like before any treatment begins. We want you to feel informed and comfortable, not blindsided by a bill.
If you have questions about cost before you even come in, call us. We are happy to talk through it with you.

If You're in Pain Right Now

Do not wait. Dental infections and severe tooth pain are not problems that resolve on their own — they worsen, sometimes rapidly, and can become serious health emergencies.
If you are experiencing significant dental pain, swelling, or signs of infection, contact us as soon as possible. We make every effort to see patients in acute pain promptly. You do not need to have a prior appointment or an existing relationship with our clinic.
If you are in pain and have no money, we can help.

Ready to Schedule?

Call us to schedule your first appointment or to ask any questions before you come in. Our team is here to help you understand what to expect, what to bring, and what care might be available to you.
You’ve taken the first step by being here. Let’s take the next one together.
