Oral Cancer Screenings

Early Detection Saves Lives — It’s That Simple
Oral Cancer Screenings

What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?

An oral cancer screening is a visual and tactile examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, throat, and neck conducted by a dental professional. The goal is to identify any abnormal tissue changes — sores, lesions, white or red patches, lumps, or unusual thickening — that could indicate the early stages of oral cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. The entire examination takes only a few minutes and is completely painless.

Why Oral Cancer Screening Matters

Oral cancer affects more than 54,000 Americans each year. When detected and treated in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate for oral cancer is approximately 84%. When detected in later stages, that rate drops dramatically. The challenge is that early oral cancer is often painless and visually subtle — easily missed without a trained eye conducting a deliberate examination.

Oral Cancer Screening at AHDC

At Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center, oral cancer screenings are included as part of our comprehensive oral health examinations. Many of the populations we serve — individuals in recovery from tobacco or alcohol addiction, those who have experienced extended gaps in dental care — are at elevated statistical risk for oral cancer. Our AEGD dental residents are trained to recognize the subtle early warning signs that require follow-up. Catching a problem at a curable stage doesn’t just save teeth. It saves lives.
