What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is an endodontic procedure used to save a tooth whose nerve (dental pulp) has become infected or irreversibly damaged. Each tooth contains a network of soft tissue inside the root canals — canals that extend from the crown of the tooth down into the root tips. When bacteria penetrate deeply enough to reach this tissue (typically through an untreated cavity, a crack, or trauma), the resulting infection can cause severe pain, abscess, and bone loss around the tooth root.
The Truth About Root Canals
Root canals have an undeserved reputation for being painful. In reality, the procedure relieves the pain caused by infection — it doesn’t create it. With modern local anesthesia and technique, a root canal appointment is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Patients who have been suffering with a dental abscess consistently describe immediate relief following treatment.
What Happens During Root Canal Treatment
- The area is numbed thoroughly with local anesthetic
- A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the inner canals
- The infected pulp tissue is carefully removed from all root canals
- The canals are shaped, cleaned, and disinfected
- The canals are filled with a biocompatible material to seal them
- A temporary or permanent filling is placed, followed by a crown in most cases
Why Saving a Tooth Matters
Extracting an infected tooth stops the pain, but it creates a new set of problems — bone loss in the jaw, shifting of adjacent teeth, and difficulty chewing — that can require further treatment down the road. Where clinically appropriate, saving a natural tooth through root canal therapy is always preferable to extraction. Your own tooth, even after root canal treatment, outperforms any replacement option in terms of function and longevity.
