When an Extraction Is the Right Decision
A tooth extraction is recommended when a tooth is so severely damaged, decayed, or infected that no other treatment can save it, or when saving it would not serve your overall oral health. At Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center, extraction is always a last resort — our team will always assess whether a tooth can be preserved before recommending removal. However, when extraction is the appropriate course of action, we prioritize your comfort, your dignity, and a clear plan for what comes next.
Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction
- Severe decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth structure to restore
- Advanced periodontal (gum) disease has caused extensive bone loss around the root
- A tooth is fractured below the gumline or in a way that cannot be repaired
- Dental infection or abscess that has not responded to, or is not a candidate for, root canal therapy
- A retained baby tooth that is blocking the eruption of a permanent tooth
- Preparation for dentures or other prosthetic work
What to Expect During an Extraction
We administer local anesthesia to ensure the procedure is completely comfortable. For a simple extraction, the tooth is gently loosened with an instrument called an elevator and then removed with forceps. More complex surgical extractions — involving impacted teeth or teeth that must be sectioned — are also performed by our trained AEGD dental residents. Most patients are surprised to find that the procedure itself is far less intense than anticipated. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to support proper healing.
Emergency Extractions When You're in Pain
A severely infected or broken tooth can cause debilitating pain that makes it impossible to sleep, eat, work, or focus on recovery. We understand that acute dental pain is a crisis — not an inconvenience — and we make every effort to treat patients in urgent pain promptly. If you are in severe pain and have no insurance or financial means, please reach out. That is exactly who we are here to serve.

Extraction Is the Beginning, Not the End
Losing a tooth does not mean you have to live with a gap. At AHDC, extractions are often the first step in a broader restorative plan that may include dentures, bridgework, or dental implants. Our team will discuss your options honestly and work with you to develop a path forward that fits your situation and your budget.
