Providing Dental Care to Underserved and Uninsured Patients in Southwest Virginia

Our Mission

“To provide effective and affordable oral health care to underserved and uninsured individuals and families in Southwest Virginia.”

Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit community dental clinic located in Abingdon, VA to provide oral health care to uninsured and recovery program adults in Southwest Virginia. Partnered with Johnston Memorial Hospital’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program, we can educate residents, encourage dentists to move to the area, and provide direct care to vulnerable populations on a sliding fee scale.

Who We Serve

The primary reach of Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center (CENTER) will be to those in underserved communities that do not have the economic means and insurance to access affordable oral health care. The patient base and outreach efforts of the CENTER will primarily come from uninsured adults in the Mount Rogers, Lenowisco and Cumberland Plateau health districts of Southwest Virginia. However, the CENTER anticipates providing models and access to uninsured families, including children without insurance, to promote strong oral health care in the community. Additionally, it is understood patients may travel and that care of patients will not be limited to patients from the region stated above. The goal is to provide care to those that would not be receiving care otherwise. Insured patients will be referred to a list of dental clinics in the area that take insurance.

A Community Partner for Recovery & Restoration

Our clinic is a “safety net” and we are particularly interested in serving individuals striving to be free from alcohol, abuse, addiction and homelessness. Appalachian Highlands will build partnerships with recovery centers and offer special program for patients referred other non-profits.

Restoring Smiles…

"I see the number of patients in the community in need of oral health care growing every year. So many people are hurting and in need and praying for some hope. We can give them that hope when we restore their smiles. It will give them confidence, they’ll be able to enter the workforce again, and they’ll be out of pain. My vision is to see that number reduce because of the support this dental center can provide.
